PRE-CHRISTMAS MEAL – Acorn Village, Thursday 20th November
For those ladies attending the pre-Christmas meal, please meet at the Co-Op car park at 6.45pm on the 20th.
The guest presenter at our November meeting was Geo Fradgley, who kindly stepped in at the last minute when our booked talk on China was cancelled by the speaker.
The subject of Geo’s talk was the Republic of Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the S.E. coast of Africa. It was discovered in 1598 by the Dutch, who named it after their own head of state Maurice Prince of Orange. Continue reading
It was with a slight feeling of apprehension that a select group of Capel Ladies met in the library on 16th October for a craft workshop with Heather Price. Continue reading

Shoomi Chowdhury
Our meeting in early October was something rather different.
Whilst on a visit last year to the Ipswich Mosque, we met Shoomi Chowdhury, a Human Rights law graduate and Muslim who works as an Education Officer for Amnesty International. She said at the time she would like to meet up with us again, and she agreed to come to one of our meetings to answer questions about Islam and the position of Muslim women in today’s world. On the 18th of September on what was a lovely sunny afternoon, eleven members were made very welcome and enjoyed a very pleasant visit to Acorn Village at Manningtree. This is home to around sixty adults with learning disabilities, some of whom are residential, others going home each night or at weekends. The aim of the village is to encourage the residents to make their own decisions and choices, also for them to lead a full and fulfilling life. Self development is encouraged with assistance always on hand.
Once our tour was over we had tea and cake in The Acorn Coffee Shop, this being another place where the residents often help with the daily running. It is open to the public and has a good menu choice at very reasonable prices.
We were all impressed by the happy, calm and relaxed atmosphere of the whole village.
You can find out more about Acorn Village on their website: http://www.acornvillages.com/
For those members going on the visit to Acorn Village, please meet at Capel shops at 1.30pm on Thursday 18th September.

The dreaded “C” word reared its ugly and somewhat early head at the Capel Ladies meeting on September 4th! The lady who uttered it was our speaker for the evening, Marilyn Coates, and she was telling us about “Operation Christmas Child”. This is the world’s largest children’s Christmas project, run by the Christian relief and development organisation Samaritan’s Purse. Continue reading
Fifteen Capel Ladies’ Club members met for a healthy and interesting pub-walk evening on 7th August. It was centred on The Ship Inn at Levington, the starting point.
Members split into two groups, one group walking three miles and the other one mile. Both groups returned to The Ship for refreshments via Levington Creek.
It was a fascinating evening with much wildlife to see, including a field of deer!
The next meeting is on September 4th at 7.45pm in Capel Library. The speaker is Marilyn Coates on “The Samaritans’ Purse – Operation Christmas Child.”
On a glorious hot summer evening, more than 40 members of Capel Ladies’ Club enjoyed their annual BBQ in Chairman Penny Thompson’s garden.
The ladies were greeted with a welcoming Pimm’s fortified with gin. Chef Nick Eaton of Capel cooked burgers, sausages, chicken breasts, Suffolk-caught rainbow trout and Capel mushrooms stuffed with his own special recipe. He also made a variety of interesting and delicious salads, and his cooking was widely praised. There were exotic desserts and the ladies brought wine and soft drinks.
The garden was lit by candles as dusk turned into darkness. The BBQ, on 17 July, was a happy four-hour event, full of fun and laughter with the last of the ladies leaving at 11.30pm.
