Jul 16th | Holbrook Creek walk

creek

Thirteen brave ladies left Capel Co-op en route to Stutton Church to go for a stroll on a cool summer’s evening in mid-July. The rain held off – and so did the midges – and we all enjoyed a gentle walk down to the river and along the embankment at Holbrook Creek.

On the way some of us spotted redshank and other waders probing the mud for their supper, plus several strange, funnel-shaped webs amongst the long grass. These webs actually belonged to the Labyrinth spiders, which as we later discovered, are shy little creatures who are completely harmless to humans and who build their funnel-shaped webs simply to protect their eggs!

Further on our intrepid bunch navigated 2 stiles and we made our way back to the cars. We adjourned to the King’s Head at Stutton to quench our thirst, and at the same time almost got involved in their pub quiz – which we have promised to enter at a future date! Another enjoyable evening with Capel Ladies!

18th Jun | Norfolk Lavender coach trip

Norfolk-Lavender

Our Summer Outing this year was to the Norfolk Lavender Farm at Heacham, near Hunstanton. Our coach full of members and guests left Capel at 8.30am on a warm, sunny day, and drove us along roads and lanes lined with embankments of cornflowers, poppies and ox-eye daisies, stopping at Sheringham Park for a coffee break. Here, several people went on a short stroll to see the Rhododendrons and Azaleas for which the Park is famous, and some even climbed one of the viewing platforms to see a bird’s eye view of the Park and the coastline. 4th Jun | Summer Social & 6th Jun | Capel Fun Day

Our annual Summer Social in the Vine Lounge was well attended as usual, and there was the delicious spread, provided by everyone’s contributions. There were quizzes and a raffle, and a good time was had by all.

Capel Fun Day on the 6th was bright and sunny, and Capel Ladies volunteers ran our usual cake stall with some games, and raised over £50 for club funds.

7th May | Parachutes, Patchwork and Poppies

20150509_232148The intriguing title on the poster for our May meeting encapsulated the names of the speaker’s three novels, and Liz Trenow’s talk about her life as a writer proved equally fascinating.

Liz was born and brought up in Sudbury, in the house next to the mill where her father followed the family business of silk weaving, producing silk for top-end fashion houses and Royal commissions. Although Liz had holiday jobs in the mill, she always wanted to write. Continue reading

16th Apr | Blakenham Woodland Garden visit

IMG_2351The sun was setting in a blaze of fire as we left Blakenham Woodland Garden on a Thursday evening in mid-April.

The garden is exactly what it says – a woodland garden, located in a seemingly natural woodland setting at the edge of a Suffolk meadow. As we passed through the gate on arrival we heard a woodpecker drumming in woods not far away, and birdsong filled the air. It was the perfect visit for a spring evening.

The garden was created from the 1950s onwards by John Hare, then MP for Sudbury and Woodbridge, who bought the wooded hill next to his house in 1951. Continue reading
