Mar 15th | Ghost Walk Around Ipswich

On Thursday 15th March 10 brave members of Capel Ladies met at 7.30pm outside St Stephen’s Church (the Tourist Office) in Ipswich. There to greet us was our guide, Ed Nicholls, and his lady assistant who was coming along for the experience as she was training to be a tour guide herself.

After introducing himself and telling us how the ghost tours began, he said that from various anecdotes and stories about different parts of the town we can learn a lot about the history of Ipswich over the years.

And so it proved! Continue reading

Mar 1st | ‘Travel to Dangerous & Unusual Places’

Everyone has their own idea of a Dream Holiday, be it a Caribbean cruise, ski-ing in the Alps or a week in a caravan on the Dorset coast.

For Jim O’Brien, though, it is none of these! He works in the travel industry as a tour leader, escorting groups on holidays to destinations in Africa, Central Asia and Papua New Guinea amongst others.

Jim began his career as a tour guide in the Middle East… Continue reading

Feb 16th | ‘Post-Christmas Meal’

There was a good turnout for our post-Christmas meal at The Brook, Washbrook. Everyone enjoyed their meals and there was plenty of merry banter flying about! Unfortunately there was no opportunity this year for another tuneful solo from Heather Robinson who performed so well for us at the Bramford Cock in 2011! Continue reading

Feb 2nd | The Book Surgeon

The intriguing title of the subject for our first “In” meeting of the year on February 2nd  was “The Book Surgeon”, and intriguing it certainly proved to be. Bernard Holton, (aged 79),  and his son Michael are both skilled craftsmen in the true sense of the word, and since 1976 they have been restoring books for book collectors, institutions, libraries and the church. Jan 19th | A.G.M. & Bingo

Our first meeting this year was the AGM on January 19th, which was well-attended, and our new committee was appointed. Di Barker was welcomed back as our new chairlady and the other volunteers were Shirley Ward, Mary Butters, Liz Gulliver and Sue Woolgar. The out-going members of the committee – Linda Biddle, Sue Yellop, Margaret Chenery, Helen Hornby and Sue Crane – were thanked for all their hard work over their two years in office.

After the official business of the evening we settled down to a couple of rounds of “Bingo”, and the evening concluded with refreshments and cakes made by the out-going committee members.

Mention should be made of the tree decorated for the Festival Of Light at the Church, done by Shirley, Pat, Molly and Di. Our theme was ‘Baking’ and the tree was decorated in red and silver.
