17th Jan | Capel Ladies Club A.G.M.

People are always afraid of coming to A.G.M.s in case they get dragged onto club committees, so it was good to see a reasonable turnout for ours! We even managed to persuade 4 new people onto the Capel Ladies Committee, without too much dragging, either! These lovely ladies are Wendy Keeble, Pat Bradford, Molly Johansen and Penny Wilson-Downe (who was particularly brave, being a fairly new member too!) Welcome to you all! Continue reading

20th Dec | Christmas Social

20121220_192432There was a good turnout for our annual Christmas Social, which was a very jolly affair! Everyone was welcomed with a free drink, courtesy of the club, which went down well. The tables were set with festive floral arrangements made by Liz Gulliver, and there were crackers, Christmas music and a bulging sack full of Secret Santa gifts for everyone! The raffle table was loaded with prizes, (not forgetting the Grand Prize of the Christmas Hamper for one lucky member) and the buffet to which everyone had contributed looked very tempting! 4th Oct | Hatch, Match & Dispatch

Our October meeting – “Hatch, Match & Dispatch” – sounded as though it was to be a rather formal lecture, all about the work of a lady Registrar, but as it turned out it was a light-hearted talk followed by a fun quiz.

Jane Parker was the Registrar, and she began by giving us some background information about the profession in general. Continue reading

6th Sept | Couture Hats & Fascinators

There was a touch of glamour around in Capel Library at our September “In” meeting!

It was all down to Debra Johnson who had come to talk about her fascinating career as a milliner, designing and creating a whole range of fabulous headwear.

Whatever the occasion, whatever the colour and style of your outfit, Debra is able to produce just the shade and design of either hat or fascinator that will suit it perfectly. Continue reading

Jul 5th | Summer Social

There was a Jubilee theme to our Summer Social this year, brightening up the evening in the Vine Lounge with everyone in red, white and blue, plus Union Jack table-cloths, plates and bunting! With a glass of sparkling wine each, and a choice of nibbles from the plates of food we had brought, there was a convivial atmosphere as the evening progressed.

Shirley Ward had set a Diamond Jubilee Quiz for us, which – although it had multiple choice answers – was trickier than it looked! Winners here were Linda Bloomfield and Beryl Grant. There was also a contest to see how many words of 4 letters or more could be made from “The Diamond Jubilee”. This was ALSO won by Linda and Beryl, who came up with over 100 between them!

Our next trip out is to Wattisham Airbase on July 19th, then on August 2nd we are meeting at the allotments to visit the newly-created wildlife area there, and on August 9th we are off to the Bramford Cock for a Summer Buffet Evening.

Our first meeting in September – on Thursday 6th – is entitled “Couture, Hats and Fascinators” with Debra Johnson – so if you’ve got a posh occasion coming up this could be for you!

Catch us on our website at: www.capelladies.com or ring 311870 for more details if you would like to join us!

Jun 7th | Cake Decorating with Glenda Price

You could have heard a pin drop in Capel Library at our June meeting! Glenda Price, a professional cake-decorating expert who has taught the subject for over 30 years in local colleges and evening classes, was “doing her stuff”! She told us at the start, in no uncertain terms, that when it comes to icing and decorating cakes, she is NOT one of the “lick and stick brigade”. No, she does it all PROPERLY! And she was certainly true to her word! Continue reading

May 3rd | DVD Evening

Our “In” meeting on 3rd May was a DVD evening in the Vine Lounge at the Village Hall. Twenty members turned up to see the film “Chocolat”, which eventually went well after initial problems with the T.V. Thanks to bar staff David and Mark, and especially Jonathan who fetched his own speakers from home to run the sound through the DVD player! To get in the mood everyone had a bar of chocolate to go with the peanuts, crisps and popcorn!

Future meetings include a visit to Wattisham Airbase, a talk and demonstration on cake decorating (could be useful if you are making a special cake for a Jubilee Party!) and a trip to Romford Stadium for an afternoon of Greyhound Racing! Place your bets now!

Apr 5th | William Pretty – Suffolk Corset Manufacturers

Our April “In” meeting was a talk by Roger Kennell, who is the local history recorder at Hadleigh, about the family and profession of William Pretty, the Suffolk manufacturer of Corsets.

William Pretty built England’s first corset factory, which later became the largest, producing a great range of corsets in innovative styles which were exported all over the world. Continue reading
