18th Apr | Theatre Trip

‘Aycking’ with laughter!

Sixteen members of Capel Ladies’ Club thoroughly enjoyed the first night of Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘Improbable Fiction’ production at East Bergholt.  The play, a comedy verging on a farce, was staged by the East Bergholt Dramatic Society in The Constable Hall.

The title is taken from a line in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night: “If this was played upon a stage, I would condemn it as an improbable fiction.”

Improbable though the play is titled, the production and acting were more than probable and, judging by the gales of laughter, were a great success. Continue reading

21st Feb | DVD Evening

“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”

Capel Ladies DVD Night at the Vine Lounge was well-attended. Everyone had turned up to see “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”, whether they had seen it before or not! Excellent film, which we could all relate to, and which had a happy, feel-good ending! Nibbles and the odd glass of wine also helped to make the evening a jolly occasion!

15th Nov | Norwich Shopping Trip

fine-city It was ideal weather – cold but sunny – for the shopping trip to Norwich on the train! There was a small but elite group of ladies and friends, who managed to get half price travel on their cheap day return tickets from Ipswich. After a coffee together they went their various ways in search of any bargains and gifts, or simply window shopping for ideas. Everyone then found somewhere nice to have lunch.  One group ate at “Caley’s Cocoa Cafe” which is situated in the 15th Century Norwich Guildhall, near the market, a very interesting building. After another bout of shopping the whole party returned home at 5, all agreeing they had had a “grand day out”.

18th Oct | Visit to Dove Close

Our visit to Dove Close, the new sheltered housing complex off Days Road in Capel, turned out to be a very well-attended one! We were made very welcome by the resident manager, Karen Suddes, who gave us a slide-show presentation about the whole project, from the planning stages to its completion. Continue reading

9th Aug | Summer Buffet at the Bramford Cock

Our Summer Buffet Evening at the Bramford Cock was a great success! With our unpredictable summer weather  we had chosen to sit indoors, but we were in the conservatory looking out at what turned out to be a lovely sunny evening, so it was a good compromise! The landlord, Bill Stoddart, joked and made us very welcome as usual, and even performed a card trick later in the evening! Continue reading

19th Jul | Wattisham Airbase Visit

A grim and gloomy place. That was my first impression of Wattisham Airbase. Granted, the weather didn’t help – it was hammering down with rain under a lid of black cloud cover on a Thursday evening in July. Just another day in our great British Summer!

Fortunately for our Capel Ladies party there was a warm and friendly welcome awaiting us from Mick and Jo Bown, the smiling couple who were our guides for the evening! We began our visit by looking round the museum… Continue reading

Jun 21st | Greyhound Racing at Romford Stadium

And – they’re OFF! Yes, Capel Ladies had a grand day out at the races! Destination – Romford town first, for a bit of shopping and a coffee, and then off to Romford Stadium to enjoy a three-course meal, followed by an exciting and entertaining afternoon of greyhound racing!

Seated at their tables for lunch, everyone had a track-side seat behind the plate-glass window, which enabled them to watch each race from beginning to end. Their meals and drinks were served at the tables, and they were even able to place their bets there too! Everyone had their own way of picking a dog! For some the luck was in the name, for others the colours, whilst the more expert punters studied the race card for form.

There was mixed success amongst the group! For the most part people broke even by the end of the day, some came away worse off, but the biggest winner of the day was Louise Evans who had obviously taken the whole thing very seriously! A grand day out!

May 17th | Garden Visit: Helmingham Hall

Unfortunately the planned trip to visit the gardens at Helmingham Hall has had to be cancelled as only 7 people wanted to go.

This could be a blessing in disguise in view of the current inclemency of the weather! 🙂
