3rd Jul | Orchard Players’ Show: ‘Juke Box Journey’

image

Twenty-five Capel Ladies’ Club members were transported back to the 1950s and 1960s by the Orchard Players’ vibrant production of Jukebox Journey with a live band in the Community Centre on 3 July. The set, an American Diner, was very professional and the cast sang and danced with gusto. The costumes for the first half of the performance looked like original 1950’s clothes, and the costumes  for the 1960’s  second half  performance  were of Mary Quant style. For the final number, Aquarius, the cast appeared as flower-power hippies!  It was a nostalgic journey for members with memories of their teenage years flooding back!

5th Jun | Summer Social (D-Day Special)

Thirty-five ladies dressed in red, white and blue commemorated the 70th anniversary of D-Day on 5th June 2014. They were attending their annual summer social held in the Community Centre’s Vine Lounge which was decorated with Union Flags and red, white and blue bunting. The table cloths and napkins also reflected the patriotic mood. There was an excellent buffet with a D-Day themed cake and a film show, The Glen Miller Story, all of which were greatly enjoyed.

Whilst enjoying the evening, the ladies were also very aware of the sacrifice of the soldiers who stormed the Normandy beaches all those years ago.

1st May | The History of Shopping – a talk by Linda Sexton

Centuries of shopping until they dropped!

Capel Ladies were taken on on a fascinating journey through centuries of shopping by their May guest speaker, Linda Sexton. Her talk, the History of Shopping, ranged from prehistory until the present day.

Shopping began with the bartering of goods well before coins were introduced. There were meeting places where farmers and other people gathered to exchange their produce which, in time, led to regular markets and later still developed into market towns. Continue reading

6th Mar | Caring for your feet – talk by Julie Garwood

This was a fascinating and informative talk by Julie Garwood, a chiropodist for 28 years who has her treatment room in Capel. The talk covered the workings and structure of the foot and, with photographs, showed the various conditions which can affect the foot. These included nail problems, corns and callouses, bunions, athlete’s foot and diabetic foot.

Our members were enthralled by the very detailed information and answers to their questions, and by the advice Julie offered afterwards. At least eight ladies also consulted her.

Julie kindly donated her fee to the Somersham Ward at Ipswich hospital and ALSO donated a treatment session to a Capel Ladies’ raffle!
